  1. So in summary, narcolepsy is caused by the gene that controls a receptor for a neurotransmitter called orexin, which promotes wakefulness and blocks REM sleep. Mignot showed that narcolepsy was caused by the disruption of the orexin system in the brain — and is absent in the brains of diagnosed patients. Further work revealed that narcolepsy is an autoimmune disorder. The neurons that produce orexin are destroyed by the body’s own immune system.

  2. weird that this article completely left out the other scientist who is sharing the prize for making the discovery separately (Masashi Yanagisawa of Japan’s University of Tsukuba). the big news from other sources was that the prize was to be shared
